Dau ar bymtheg doliau cymreig (seventeen welsh dolls)’ explores society’s stereotyped view of women and mothers, exposing and questioning traditional gender roles. Rooted in 19th century generalisations that focus on the visual and the quaint, the dolls aim to challenge collective, inherited boundaries and prejudices. Their physical confinement accentuates each doll’s generic yet unique appearance, and symbolises how roles born from childhood play can restrict women in adulthood. In this autobiographical piece, I am drawing on Freud’s notion of the ‘uncanny and combining my personal experience of growing up in Wales with my fascination with an iconic, yet idealised, representation of Welsh culture.
